‘Comic Book App’ progress so far!

One of the first briefs we have been given at Duncan of Jordanstone is to design the front end for an iPhone or iPad App for reading comic books. There is no coding involved, we’ve just to come up with the brand and all the imagery for the actual app. It has been just over a week since we were given the brief and so far all we have to have done is the logo and some initial ideas on the functionality.

Here is my progress so far. I start with some mind mapping and getting some names together for the actual brand name. This worked quite well for me as I got the name quick and started on the actual design of it.

I like to get on the Mac straight away with logos as working with type is much different on screen than it is trying to draw them out. This one did however work well for me as it gave me an idea and direction to go right from the get go. I knew from my sketches that I wanted a tall condensed font, something thin but with a few different weights. I did try a few other fonts, including Gotham Rounded and Futura, but if I’m being honest, these were just to stick in the sketchbook to bulk it out a little. I decided on using Cyclone by H&FJ as it had everything I wanted in a typeface. I am sure there are others out there I could have used, but I didn’t have access to them.

Once I had the right logo in mind it was just a case of tweaking it here and there and seeing what colours worked best. I tried different angles of the speech bubble and I tried various layouts of the typeface.

By this stage I still had a few days before I had to show Phil any of my work so I started working on the app icon that would be on the iPhone/iPad. Here are a few ideas sketched, alongside the final logo. Then I created them as best I could on the Mac. Need more work on these though, and so this is my progress so far!
